Hello.

I don't want to use FlashBlock extension again since I dumped it because
both the latest SeaMonkey and Firefox web browsers have plug-in blockers
for Flash, Silverlight, etc.

Thank you in advance. :)

I don't think FlashBlock would block HTML5 videos anyway.

I have the PrefBar extension installed. I created a button to block
HTML5 media. It toggles the media.autoplay.enabled preference variable.

Given that you now know what preference variable is involved, you can
now create your own PrefBar button. Otherwise, I can provide it to you
for you to download and import into PrefBar.

I don't think FlashBlock would block HTML5 videos anyway.
http://flashblock.mozdev.org/ says "2013-03-23: Flashblock 1.5.17
released for Firefox 4.0 to Firefox 22.0 (Nightly).
2013-03-23: Flashblock 1.3.20 released for Seamonkey 2.0 to 2.19 (Nightly).

New features and fixes:

[fix] Bug 24896 Allow whitelist for some sites. Patch by Tommy Wu.
[fix]Re-enable whitelist integration with Adblock Plus and other
content blockers.
[fix] Don't enable controls for HTML5 video/audio since some sites
(Youtube) have their own video controls.
[new] Add option to enable/disable HTML5 video blocking..."

I really like Mozilla's plug-in blocker. I wished it could block HTML5
videos internally.

Go to <http://rossde.com/test/>. Find HTML5_toggle.btn. Right-click
and select "Save Link Target As" and select a location.

Launch SeaMonkey. Right-click on the PrefBar tool bar and select
"Customize PrefBar". In the right-hand pane, right-click and select
"Import". Navigate to where you saved HTML5_toggle.btn, select it, and
select the Open button.

I seen you're running SM2.23. If you have 'PrefBar' installed you can
easily create a button of its menu. Insturctions:

1. Right click anywhere on 'PrefBar' and select 'Customize PrefBar'.
2. Right click anywhere in the 'Available Items' box and select 'New'.
3. From drop-down menu select 'Checkbox'.
4. Fill in the 'Checkbox' form as follows:
a. Id: WebM
b. Label: WebM
c. toPrep: value
d. fromPrep: value
e. Hotkey: (disabled)
5. Click on 'Apply.

New 'Item Name' (WebM) should now appear in the left column.
Right click on it and move it to the left column ('enabled Items')
in what ever position you would like it to be displayed.

In the meantime - enjoy whatever is left of the "Polar Vortex". (:<

Hi again.

I had a HDD crash so I had to redo my Windows OS, setups, etc. from
scratch. I noticed Prefbar asks for a value in Prefstring's form. What
do I enter? I tried value, but the button didn't work.

Thank you in advance. :)

I created a PrefBar checkbox with the ID "HTML5 Media Autoplay" and the
Label "HTML5 Media". Under Prefstring, it toggles the preference
variable "media.autoplay.enabled". Both toPref and fromPref are merely
"value". (All of the above without the quotes.)

Oops! I almost forgot the following.

In file user.js in my profile, I inserted:
user_pref("media.autoplay.enabled", false);
// in case I forget, disables HTML5 media
Do not forget to include the semi-colon (;) at the end of the first
line. The second line is a comment to remind me why I have this in
user.js.

David, is autoplay only a function of HTML5 or would a pref
"user_pref("media.autoplay.enabled", true); cause any type of
media/video file to autoplay??

When I first updated user.js for this, I was under the impression that
it applied only to HTML5 media. I do not recall why that was my
impression. I can guess that it might have been because HTML5 media was
the only media/video capability inherent in the browser that did not
require a plugin or extension.

Both browsers have Click to Play plugin which works for HTML5 as well as
Flash. You can also install Click to Play Manager on both browsers for
easy whitelisting.
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/click-to-play-manager/?src=search

You are saying that when you go to Youtube, for instance, and there is
video there that plays in HTML5 that it just starts playing on SM and
Fx? It shouldn't. IE 10 (on Win 8) is a very different story as HTML5
video will just start playing on IE but on Fx and SM you should get a
click to play arrow.

Well im concerned about this too. Not only media play, but also on certain sites i have seen some flashy (pun intended) html5/svg based advertisements with moving stuff etc, looking exacctly like the flash based ones. Besides being annoying, they used quite some cpu.

"The great companies did not know that the line between hunger and anger
is a thin line. And money that might have gone to wages went for gas,
for guns, for agents and spies, for blacklists, for drilling. On the
highways the people moved like ants and searched for work, for food. And
the anger began to ferment." --John Steinbeck's The Grapes of Wrath
